The state of the NFL and Fantasy Football

I didn't realize it until halftime of the 4pm EST games on Sunday. A buddy of mine asked me why I was so interested in watching the Raiders play.

"Well Carson Palmer didn't want to play in Cincinnati anymore so he held out and he hasn't played in a really long time and the Raiders just traded TWO first round picks for him and he used to be really good but now nobody knows and the Raiders owner just died so you kind of feel sorry for them and hope they do good but its the Raiders so nobody really cares..."

I found myself rambling for a solid 5 minutes before everything clicked. The defense celebrates after every sack, Rex Ryan was taunting Norv Turner leading up to Sunday's games, Tom Brady's hair being an actual topic of conversation...it was a soap opera! Sure, the hitting was real and players do get severely injured, but the story lines draw you in more than anything. This is what I hate about the NFL.

In today's day and age, the actual on field action is the 3rd most important thing about Sundays to the casual fan. In reverse order the list goes: 3) The Game being played 2)All the tweets leading up to the game, and 1) Fantasy Football.

While I could go on a social media rant about Twitter being taken far too seriously by mostly everyone, I will instead rant about Fantasy Football. Fantasy Football has given people the option of saying things like, "No I don't really follow football but I play fantasy!". Although you could make the "So what?" case, those are the people cheering the loudest for a player they don't care about on a team they don't like during a non-pivotal portion of a meaningless game. They take such joy in beating you on any given fantasy week yet follow no team of their own. They talk about 4th string running backs on the Houston Texans practice squad then scoff at you when you have no idea what they are talking about.

Fantasy Football, ladies and gentlemen, making me hate the NFL more and more with each passing week.
